JOB DESCRIPTION

Computer System and Equipment Installers and Servicers are professionals responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of computer systems, hardware, and related equipment. Their role is crucial in ensuring the proper functioning of computer systems within various environments.

QUALIFICATIONS

Entry is possible with a variety of academic qualifications and/or relevant experience. Entrants typically possess GCSEs/S grades and A levels/H grades, BTEC/SQA awards or a degree. Training is usually provided on-the-job supplemented by specialised courses. Postgraduate and professional qualifications, and NVQs/SVQs at Levels 2 and 3 are available.

TASKS

  • Install and set up computer systems, including desktop computers, laptops, servers, and peripheral devices, by specifications and requirements..
  • Configure hardware components such as CPUs, memory, storage devices, graphics cards, and other peripherals to optimize system performance..
  • Install and configure operating systems, software applications, and drivers on computer systems..
  • Set up and configure network connectivity, including wired and wireless connections, to ensure proper communication between computers and network resources..
  • Install and configure peripheral devices such as printers, scanners, and external storage devices..
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware and software issues, identifying and implementing solutions to resolve problems..
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including system updates, patches, and hardware inspections, to ensure the ongoing reliability of computer systems..
  • Upgrade hardware components, software applications, and operating systems to keep computer systems current and capable of meeting user requirements..
  • Install and update antivirus software to protect computer systems from security threats, including viruses, malware, and other malicious software..
  • Implement data backup solutions and perform regular backups to prevent data loss. Facilitate data recovery in the event of system failures..
  • Provide technical support to end-users, assisting with hardware and software-related issues and answering user queries..
  • Maintain accurate records of system configurations, installations, upgrades, and maintenance activities..
  • Implement security measures, such as password policies and access controls, to protect computer systems and sensitive data..
  • Communicate effectively with clients or end-users to understand their needs, address concerns, and provide updates on service activities.
  • Ensure that computer installations and maintenance activities comply with industry standards, regulations, and organizational policies..
  • Conduct quality assurance checks to ensure that computer systems meet performance and reliability standards..
